Talent Management: The New Business of Business Leaders

The convergence of business practice and human resource processes has been accelerating in recent years.  Increasingly, business leaders are driving key talent functions, including sourcing, hiring and onboarding; learning and development; performance management and compensation; and succession planning and talent mobility.  While business-led talent practices provide considerable benefits for the business and the HR department, comparably little has been written about the value of these activities for business leaders.  In this first paper in this series, we highlight research showing the strong connections between talent management focus among business leaders and their overall leadership effectiveness.  Subsequent papers explore the talent insights and tools business leaders need to more effectively manage the key talent functions noted above.
