iLogos Study “Where the Jobs Are” Identifies Consequences for Fortune 500 Companies and Gives Tips for Job Seekers

Survey finds Fortune 500 corporations post up to three times more positions on own corporate Careers Web sites when compared with major job boards

San Francisco, CA – June 5, 2002 –

iLogos Research (www.ilogos.com), the leading research and consulting firm covering online human capital management (HCM) trends and best practice methodologies, today released Where the Jobs Are: Fortune 500 Job Postings on Careers Web Sites and Major Job Boards. An executive summary can be downloaded at www.ilogos.com/iLogosWJA/. The survey data shows Fortune 500 companies are publicizing a larger number of job opportunities on the corporate Careers Web site by a factor of nearly three to one over the largest job boards sites of Monster, CareerBuilder and HotJobs. The study also provides job seekers with strategic tips to help find available positions in this economy. iLogos Research is a division of Recruitsoft, Inc., the leading provider of enterprise staffing management solutions. iLogos has been providing information about the adoption of corporate Web site recruiting and staffing since 1997.

iLogos Founder and President Yves Lermusiaux states, “In today’s economy, corporations must become more efficient in finding top professionals faster and job seekers need to know where the jobs are. It’s clear by the results of this Fortune 500 survey that the majority of the available positions with the Fortune 500 are listed right on the corporate Careers Web site.”

Since the inception of electronic recruiting in the mid-1990’s, increased emphasis has been placed on the use of the Internet as a channel for sourcing. The survey finds that 81 percent of Fortune 500 companies are posting on the Careers Web site, compared with 51 percent for Monster, 43 percent for HotJobs and 22 percent for CareerBuilder. Furthermore, based on the study, the total number of available positions on Fortune 500 Corporate Careers Web sites was found to be approximately 75,000 compared with roughly 25,500 for Monster, 13,200 for CareerBuilder and 7,800 for HotJobs.

“Over the years, job boards have received significant visibility and consumer Web site traffic,” states Lermusiaux. “Today, more Fortune 500 corporations are able to capitalize on corporate Web site traffic and simultaneously enhance branding because many utilize sophisticated back-end staffing management technologies to manage pre-screening and, importantly, build and maintain candidate relationship databases.”

He continues, “Tracking and reporting on staffing information in an automated fashion is becoming increasingly important for large organizations to analyze associated staffing management costs such as advertising spending by source to ensure an optimum ROI.”

Ten Tips for Job Seekers Online

  1. Target employer(s) of interest; go directly to corporate Careers Web site to view most comprehensive job listings and research information on company.

  2. To identify employer(s) of interest, use search functionality of large job boards to sort opportunities by location, by job function or industry.

  3. Following job board search, verify current and additional job postings on corporate Careers Web site.

  4. Use niche job boards for narrower searches and professional networking through, for instance, alumni or industry associations.

  5. Provide information to corporations in digital format only, in order to streamline the recruiting process and communications (no fax or postal mail).

  6. For resume “cut and paste” use only simple document formatting: basic font and layout.

  7. To be best distinguished as a candidate, use application tools such as profiling questionnaires to the fullest.

  8. If applying online through public job boards, be aware that resume information may be accessed by several sources including search firms vs. exclusive use by the corporation when applying via the corporate Web site.

  9. For notification of future career opportunities, use features such as Job Agents (leave profile information and receive email about positions that match) to maximize job-seeking efforts.

  10. Always research the corporate Web site prior to follow-up and interviews.
